Journeyman Electrician Resources

The National Electrical Code (NEC) is the model electrical code used across the United States, published by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA). The Texas journeyman exam is open book against the NEC 2026 edition. The code is organized into nine chapters plus tables:

• Chapter 1 — General: administration, definitions (Article 100), and general requirements (Article 110).
• Chapter 2 — Wiring and Protection: branch circuits, feeders, services, overcurrent protection, and grounding and bonding (Articles 200–285).
• Chapter 3 — Wiring Methods and Materials: conductors, boxes, conduit, cable, and raceways (Articles 300–398).
• Chapter 4 — Equipment for General Use: flexible cords, fixtures, motors, appliances, and space heating (Articles 400–490).
• Chapters 5–8 — Special: special occupancies (500–590), special equipment (600–695), and special conditions and communications (700–840).
• Chapter 9 — Tables: conductor and raceway fill tables used by the Calculations line.

Both exam parts are open book: you bring the NEC 2026, and you are tested on your ability to find and apply its requirements. Success depends on code navigation — knowing which chapter covers which topic, using the index efficiently, and reading sections including their exceptions — not on memorization.
