What Is the Journeyman Electrician License?

The journeyman electrician license certifies that you can install, alter, and repair electrical systems in compliance with the National Electrical Code (NEC). In Texas it is issued by the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR) after you document supervised experience and pass a two-part exam administered by PSI. It qualifies you to work independently in the field under a licensed master electrician — and it is the required stepping stone on the path to a master license.

Step 1: Document 8,000 Hours of Experience

Before you can sit for the exam, you need at least 8,000 hours of practical electrical experience — typically about four years of full-time work — performed under the supervision of a licensed master electrician. How Long Does It Take to Get Licensed?
