Why Navigation Beats Memorization

The National Electrical Code is roughly a thousand pages across nine chapters. No one memorizes it — and the exam does not ask you to. Because both parts of the Texas journeyman exam are open book, every question can be answered by finding the right section. Candidates who pass are the ones who know where to look; candidates who fail are usually the ones who tried to memorize instead of navigate.

The NEC Chapter Map

The NEC is organized into nine chapters. Chapters 1–4 apply generally to all electrical installations; Chapters 5–8 modify or supplement them for special occupancies, equipment, conditions, and communications; Chapter 9 holds the tables.

• Chapter 1 — General (Articles 90–110): introduction, definitions, and general installation requirements. Article 100 definitions and Article 110 general requirements are exam staples.
• Chapter 2 — Wiring and Protection (Articles 200–285): branch circuits, feeders, services, overcurrent protection, grounding and bonding. The highest-weight chapter on the NEC Knowledge part.
• Chapter 3 — Wiring Methods and Materials (Articles 300–398): conductors, boxes, conduit, cable, and raceways.
• Chapter 4 — Equipment for General Use (Articles 400–490): flexible cords, switches, receptacles, motors, appliances, and space-heating equipment.
• Chapter 5 — Special Occupancies (Articles 500–590): hazardous locations, health care facilities, and other special settings.
• Chapter 6 — Special Equipment (Articles 600–695): signs, elevators, electric vehicle supply equipment, and more.
• Chapters 7–8 — Special Conditions and Communications (Articles 700–840): emergency systems, optional standby systems, and communications circuits.
• Chapter 9 — Tables: conductor area, raceway area, and fill tables that power the Calculations part.

Memorize the map above before anything else. When you read a question about "service disconnecting means," you should already know the answer lives in Chapter 2, Article 230 — before you even open the index.

Understanding Section Numbering

NEC section numbers encode their location. An article number tells you the chapter and topic: 230 is services, 250 is grounding and bonding, 300 is general wiring methods, 430 is motors. Within an article, sections follow the article number with a decimal: 230.70 is the service disconnecting means section of Article 230; 250.66 sizes the grounding electrode conductor. When a question cites a section you have never opened, the article number alone tells you which chapter to flip to — a shortcut that saves minutes on exam day.

Index-First Strategy

For an unfamiliar question, go to the index first — not the table of contents. Drill the loop: read the question, identify the key term, find it in the index, flip to the section, and read the exact language including exceptions. Most lookup questions have an index entry that points straight at the answer, so index fluency is the fastest single skill to build. Practice it until a full lookup takes under 45 seconds.

High-Weight Articles and Tables to Know Cold

Exam questions cluster around a few articles and tables. Know their numbers, their chapter locations, and what they regulate:

• Article 100 — definitions ("continuous load," "dwelling unit," "readily accessible").
• Article 210 — branch circuits, including receptacle requirements and GFCI/AFCI rules.
• Article 220 — branch-circuit, feeder, and service load calculations, with the lighting load tables.
• Article 230 — services, including the disconnecting means rules.
• Article 240 — overcurrent protection, including the small-conductor rules in 240.4.
• Article 250 — grounding and bonding, the most-failed topic on many code exams.
• Article 310 — conductors for general wiring and the ampacity tables.
• Article 430 — motors: branch-circuit sizing, overload, and short-circuit protection.
• Chapter 9, Tables 1–5 — raceway and conductor fill for the Calculations part.
