30-Day Journeyman Exam Study Plan: A Day-by-Day Schedule

A focused 30-day sprint for candidates whose TDLR eligibility is approved and who want a structured path to passing both parts of the Texas journeyman exam — the NEC Knowledge part (59 questions) and the Calculations part (26 questions).

How This Plan Works

This plan assumes you have already documented your 8,000 hours and been approved to test, and that you can study 60–90 minutes most days. It splits into three phases: build the code map, drill chapter by chapter while running calculations practice in parallel, then simulate and harden. Every session is open book — the code should be beside you from day one.

Phase 1: Map the Code (Days 1–4)

Days 1–2: learn the NEC chapter map and the article numbering system. Read Article 90 (introduction) and skim Article 100 (definitions) — especially "continuous load," "dwelling unit," and "readily accessible." Days 3–4: work through Chapter 1 (Articles 100 and 110) and Chapter 2 (Articles 200–285) with practice questions. Start your weak-chapter log now: every question you miss goes on the list with its article number.

Phase 2: Drill Chapter by Chapter (Days 5–20)

Work through the code in exam-weight order, answering practice questions with the code open and verifying every reference:

  • Days 5–8 — Article 250 grounding and bonding: the most-failed topic on code exams. Grounding electrodes, grounding electrode conductors, bonding jumpers, and equipment grounding.
  • Days 9–11 — Chapter 3 wiring methods (Articles 300–398): boxes, conduit, cable, and raceway requirements, including box fill.
  • Days 12–14 — Chapter 4 equipment (Articles 400–490): switches, receptacles, motors, and appliances. Pair Article 430 motor rules with the Calculations track below.
  • Days 15–17 — Chapters 5–8 special areas (Articles 500–840): special occupancies, special equipment, and special conditions — plus electrical theory and safety review.
  • Days 18–20 — Calculations bootcamp: dwelling and load calculations (Article 220), ampacity (Article 310 and tables), voltage drop, box and conduit fill (Chapter 9), and motors and overcurrent protection (Articles 430, 450, 240).

Phase 3: Simulate and Harden (Days 21–30)

The final ten days are about exam shape, not new material. Run a full-length timed simulation of each part every few days — 59 questions in 130 minutes for NEC Knowledge, 26 questions in 110 minutes for Calculations — with your code book and approved calculator. Review every missed question and re-drill the articles that appear in your weak-chapter log. In the last two days, stop learning new content, confirm your testing-center logistics, and get rest. A rested navigator beats an exhausted memorizer every time.

Daily Rhythm (60–90 Minutes)

A typical study day: 10 minutes of index-lookup drills on yesterday's chapters, 30–40 minutes of timed practice questions on the current chapter, 15 minutes reviewing missed questions and their code references, and 10 minutes updating your weak-chapter log. Three evenings a week, swap the middle block for calculation problems. Once a week during Phase 2, replace the whole session with a timed simulation.
