What Is the Wyoming Journeyman License?

The Wyoming journeyman electrician license is issued by the Electrical Board within the Department of Fire Prevention & Electrical Safety (the State Fire Marshal’s Office, Cheyenne). It is valid statewide and authorizes electrical work under the supervision of a licensed master or electrical contractor. The program is grounded in W.S. 35-9-126, with implementing rules in 041-5 Wyoming Code Rules.

The Requirements

• 8,000 hours (4 years) of documented electrical experience, including approved apprenticeship time.
• Electrical Board approval before scheduling the examination.
• Pass the ICC exam — exam 385, Wyoming Journeyman Electrician, at 70%.

The exam has 80 scored multiple-choice questions with 4 hours (240 minutes) allowed. You need 70% to pass (041-5 Wyo. Code R. §5-3(e)). It is open book — the 2023 NEC is the primary reference for code questions. The Pearson VUE examination fee is $115.
