1.1 Introduction to Special Occupancies

Article 500 through Article 517, along with several others, are grouped under the umbrella of "Special Occupancies." These are locations where the nature of the occupancy creates hazards or requires special electrical considerations beyond those of a typical commercial or residential building. The exam will test your ability to match the correct article to a given scenario and apply its specific rules. Do not confuse these with "Special Equipment" (Articles 600–690) or "Special Conditions" (Articles 700–770).

1.2 Hazardous Locations: The Foundation (Article 500)

Before you can apply the specific occupancy rules, you must understand the classification system. The NEC divides hazardous locations into Classes based on the type of hazard and Divisions (or Zones) based on the probability of the hazard being present.

Classes:

Class I: Flammable gases, vapors, or liquids.
Class II: Combustible dusts.
Class III: Ignitible fibers or flyings.

Divisions:

Division 1: Hazard exists under normal operating conditions (e.g., during repair, maintenance, or due to frequent equipment failure).
Division 2: Hazard exists only under abnormal conditions (e.g., accidental rupture, container failure, or equipment breakdown).

Zones (Alternative method, per 500.1): The NEC also permits a Zone classification system for Class I locations (Groups IIC, IIB, IIA). This is less common on the journeyman exam, but you should know it exists. Zone 0 is the most hazardous (continuous presence), Zone 1 is intermittent, and Zone 2 is abnormal.

Exam Trap: Do not confuse the Class with the Division. A Class I, Division 1 location is a gas-filled environment under normal operation. A Class II, Division 2 location is a dust location where dust is not normally present in ignitible concentrations.


1.3 Commercial Garages, Repair and Storage (Article 511)

This article applies to locations used for vehicle service, repair, or storage where flammable liquids or gases are used as fuel or for power. Think of a typical auto repair shop.

Hazardous Area Classification (511.3):

The floor area up to 18 inches (450 mm) above the floor is classified as Class I, Division 2 in any area where flammable fuel is transferred or used. This is the critical dimension to remember.
Any pit, belowgrade opening, or subfloor area is classified as Class I, Division 1 if it is not ventilated.
Lubrication and service rooms without fuel transfer are not classified, provided they have adequate ventilation.

Wiring Methods (511.7):

Wiring above the 18-inch level can be standard commercial wiring (e.g., NM cable, EMT).
Wiring within the 18-inch classified zone must be suitable for Class I, Division 2 locations (e.g., threaded rigid metal conduit, sealed fittings).
Sealing: Seals are required where conduits leave the classified area. A horizontal seal is required within 18 inches of the boundary.

Field Point: When installing a lift, the junction box for the lift motor is often mounted high on the column, above the 18-inch line. The flexible cord to the motor must be approved for hard usage and have a grounding conductor.

Exam Trap: The 18-inch rule applies to the floor area, not the workbench or a shelf. A receptacle mounted on a wall at 24 inches is outside the classified area. A receptacle mounted at 12 inches is inside.


1.4 Aircraft Hangars (Article 513)

This article covers storage, servicing, or maintenance of aircraft where fuel is used. The hazards are similar to garages, but the scale and ventilation are different.

Hazardous Area Classification (513.3):

Any pit or belowgrade area is Class I, Division 1.
The floor area up to 18 inches above the floor, plus the entire volume within 4 feet (1.2 m) horizontally from the aircraft nacelle or fuel tanks, is Class I, Division 2.
The area within 5 feet (1.5 m) horizontally from the aircraft and extending from the floor up to the top of the aircraft wing is also Class I, Division 2.

Wiring Methods (513.7):

Wiring in the classified zones must be in threaded rigid metal conduit, IMC, or Type MI cable.
Dead Front: All switches, breakers, and controls must be dead-front (no exposed live parts).
Static Bonding: Aircraft must be bonded to the hangar structure to prevent static discharge.

Field Point: You will often see retractable ceiling-mounted receptacles for ground power units. These are designed to be lowered into the classified zone only when connected to the aircraft, and they are listed for that purpose.


1.5 Motor Fuel Dispensing Facilities (Article 514)

This article covers locations where gasoline or other volatile fuels are dispensed. This is a high-stakes area for the exam.

Hazardous Area Classification (514.3):

The space within 18 inches of the ground or grade level, extending 20 feet (6 m) horizontally in all directions from the dispenser, is Class I, Division 2.
The interior of the dispenser is Class I, Division 1.
Any pit or belowgrade space within 20 feet of the dispenser is Class I, Division 2 (unless ventilated).
The area within 18 inches of the ground, extending 20 feet from the tank fill pipe, is also Class I, Division 2.

Wiring Methods (514.8):

Underground wiring must be in threaded rigid metal conduit, IMC, or Type MI cable.
Disconnects (514.11): A clearly identified, lockable disconnect switch must be provided to disconnect power to all dispensing equipment. This switch must be located at a minimum of 20 feet from the dispensers, or be a circuit breaker in a panelboard that is at least 20 feet away. This is a frequently tested requirement.
Sealing (514.9): An approved seal must be installed in each conduit run entering or leaving a dispenser, within 18 inches of the dispenser enclosure.

Exam Trap: The 20-foot disconnect rule is for power to the dispensers, not for emergency shutdown. Emergency shutoff buttons (if required by other codes) are located at the dispenser island.


1.6 Health Care Facilities (Article 517)

This is a large, complex article. The exam focuses on patient care areas and the essential electrical system.

Patient Care Areas (517.2):

Category 1 (Critical Care): Areas where patients are subjected to invasive procedures and connected to line-operated, electromedical devices. (e.g., Operating rooms, ICU).
Category 2 (General Care): Areas where patients may come into contact with ordinary appliances (e.g., patient rooms, exam rooms).
Category 3 (Basic Care): Areas where patients are not connected to line-operated devices (e.g., waiting rooms, administrative offices).

Wiring Methods (517.30):

In Category 1 and 2 spaces, all wiring must be in metal raceways (EMT, RMC) or Type MI cable. Nonmetallic cable (NM) is prohibited in these areas.
Receptacles in Category 1 and 2 spaces must be listed as "hospital grade" and marked "Hospital Grade" or "HG."
Grounding: A redundant grounding path is required. This is achieved by an insulated copper equipment grounding conductor run with the circuit conductors, plus the metal raceway serving as a second path.

Essential Electrical System (517.30 – 517.35):

This is the backup power system. It is divided into two branches:

86.Life Safety Branch: Powers egress lighting, exit signs, fire alarm systems, and communication systems. This branch must be automatically restored within 10 seconds of a power failure.
87.Critical Branch: Powers task illumination, selected receptacles in patient care areas, and equipment required for patient safety. This branch also has a 10-second restoration requirement.

Exam Trap: The 10-second rule applies to both the Life Safety and Critical branches. The Equipment Branch (for large HVAC and medical gas compressors) does not have a 10-second requirement; it can be manually or automatically restored.

Field Point: When installing receptacles in a patient room (Category 2), you must ensure the grounding terminal is connected to the insulated grounding conductor, not just the metal box. The box alone is not sufficient for the redundant ground.


1.7 Places of Assembly (Article 518)

This applies to buildings or portions of buildings used for assembly of 100 or more persons (e.g., theaters, churches, banquet halls, arenas).

Wiring Methods (518.4):

The general wiring must be in metal raceways, MC cable, or Type MI cable.
Nonmetallic sheathed cable (NM) is permitted if the building is of noncombustible construction and the walls, floors, and ceilings are of noncombustible material.
Portable Cords: Flexible cords are permitted for connection of portable equipment, but they must be listed for hard usage.

Exam Trap: The 100-person threshold is the trigger. A small conference room for 50 people is not a place of assembly. Also, the rule applies to the space, not the entire building. A restaurant with a dining area for 150 and a kitchen for staff – the dining area is the place of assembly.


1.8 Theaters and Similar Locations (Article 520)

This article covers theaters, motion picture studios, and similar locations. Key points include:

Dimmers: All resistance or solid-state dimmers must be installed in approved enclosures.
Portable Cables: Flexible cords used for stage lighting must be listed for extra-hard usage (Type S, SO, etc.).
Pilot Lights: A pilot light must be visible on stage switchboards to indicate when the main switch is on.
Fire Curtain: The motor for a fire curtain must be on the life safety side of the electrical system.

Field Point: When wiring a stage, remember that the "stage" is a distinct area. Receptacles on stage are typically on dimmer circuits, while receptacles in the auditorium are on general lighting circuits. Do not mix them.


1.9 Agricultural Buildings (Article 547)

This article applies to buildings for agricultural use, such as barns, milking parlors, and poultry houses. The primary hazards are moisture, dust, and corrosive atmospheres.

Wiring Methods (547.5):

Wiring must be suitable for wet and corrosive conditions. Use corrosion-resistant materials (e.g., aluminum or stainless steel boxes, PVC-coated conduit).
Nonmetallic cable (NM) is permitted in dry locations within the building, but it must be protected from physical damage.
Equipotential Planes (547.10): In livestock areas, an equipotential plane must be installed around the animals to prevent step-and-touch voltages. This involves bonding all conductive surfaces and structural metal.

Exam Trap: The equipotential plane requirement is specific to livestock areas, not all agricultural buildings. A grain storage shed without animals does not require this.

1.11 Practical Field Points & Common Exam Traps

Field Points:

120.Always check the classification first. Before you pull a single wire in a garage or hangar, measure the height of your junction boxes. If they are below 18 inches, you need classified fittings.
121.Hospital work is about grounding. The redundant ground is not optional. Use the green insulated wire and make sure it is pigtailed to the device, not just the box.
122.Look for the disconnect. On a fuel dispenser job, the inspector will look for the lockable disconnect at 20 feet. Install it before the conduit reaches the island.
123.In agricultural buildings, think about the animals. Bond everything metal near the livestock. A stray voltage can cause weight loss and health issues in dairy cows.

Common Exam Traps:

Trap 1: The 18-inch rule. It is 18 inches for garages and fuel dispensers. It is not 24 inches or 12 inches. Memorize this number.
Trap 2: NM cable in hospitals. It is allowed in Category 3 spaces (waiting rooms) but prohibited in Category 1 and 2 spaces. The exam will give you a scenario of a patient room and ask if NM is allowed. The answer is no.
Trap 3: The 100-person rule. A place of assembly is 100 or more. A small chapel with 80 seats is not an assembly occupancy per Article 518.
Trap 4: Zones vs. Divisions. The exam may ask about a Zone 0 location. Remember that Zone 0 is for continuous hazard (inside a fuel tank), which is more hazardous than Division 1.
Trap 5: The disconnect distance. The disconnect for fuel dispensers is 20 feet. The disconnect for a commercial garage is not specified by distance; it is simply required to be readily accessible. Do not mix these up.
Trap 6: Sealing fittings. Seals are required where conduits enter a classified area (e.g., a dispenser) or leave a classified area (e.g., a garage floor). The distance is always 18 inches from the boundary.

1.12 Summary

Special Occupancies are governed by a patchwork of articles that all hinge on the concept of hazard classification. Start by determining if the location is hazardous (Class I, II, III) and to what degree (Division 1 or 2). Then, apply the specific article for the occupancy type.
