What Is the Oklahoma Unlimited Journeyman License?

The Oklahoma Unlimited Electrical Journeyman license is issued by the Construction Industries Board (CIB) and covers the design, plan, layout, installation, repair, and alteration of electrical conductors, fixtures, apparatus, raceways, and related equipment for light, heat, power, data, and communications in a supervised environment.

The Requirements

• 8,000 hours (4 years) of documented electrical experience under a licensed electrician.
• CIB approval before scheduling the examination.
• Pass the PSI exam — 100 scored questions at 70%.

Exam Format: 100 Questions, 4 Hours, Open Book

The exam has 100 scored multiple-choice questions with a 4-hour (240-minute) time limit. You need 70% (70 of 100 raw) to pass — lowered from 75% by HB 3215 for candidates testing from November 1, 2024. It is open book on the 2023 NEC and OSHA 29 CFR 1926.

What the Exam Covers

• General Electrical Knowledge — 10 questions. Voltage, current, resistance, power, AC and three-phase theory, troubleshooting, codebook use.
• Electrical Installation Requirements — 10 questions. Approved installation methods, including over 600 volts.
• Services, Feeders, and Branch Circuits — 10 questions. Services, feeders, branch circuits, outside circuits, voltage drop.
• Grounding and Bonding — 10 questions. General requirements, electrode and equipment grounding conductor sizing.
• Special Occupancies and Equipment — 10 questions. Hazardous locations, health facilities, pools and fountains, mobile homes.
• Lighting and Signs — 10 questions. Fixtures, recessed fixtures, low-voltage lighting, neon and electric signs.
• Overcurrent Protection — 9 questions. NEC overcurrent requirements.
• Conductors and Cables — 8 questions. Underground, vertical, armored, MC, NM, SE, UF, MI, MV cable rules.
• Raceways and Boxes — 7 questions. Conduit types, raceway fill, boxes, wireways, cable trays.
• Motors and Transformers — 6 questions. Motor branch circuits and transformer use.
• General Knowledge — 4 questions. Permits, inspections, structural integrity, needs analysis and estimate.
• Safety — 4 questions. OSHA 29 CFR 1926: PPE, fall protection, ladders, scaffolds, excavation.
• Low Voltage, Alarms, Signaling, and Communications — 2 questions. Limited-energy and communications systems.

How to Prepare

• Weight by the blueprint. General Electrical Knowledge + Installation Requirements + Services/Feeders/Branch (30) plus Grounding and Bonding (10) is 40% of the exam.
• Learn both references. Oklahoma uniquely tests OSHA 29 CFR 1926 construction safety — study PPE, fall protection, ladders, and scaffolds in addition to the NEC.
• Master Chapter 9 tables. Conduit fill and box fill calculations appear throughout the raceway and box questions.
