What Is the Maine Journeyman License?

The Maine journeyman electrician license is issued by the Electricians’ Examining Board, part of the Office of Professional and Occupational Regulation (OPOR) within the Department of Professional & Financial Regulation. It is valid statewide and authorizes electrical work under the supervision of a licensed master electrician.

The Requirements

• 8,000 hours (4 years) of documented electrical experience under a licensed master electrician.
• Board approval before scheduling the examination.
• Pass the Prov exam — 80 scored questions at 70%.

Exam Format: 80 Questions, 3 Hours, Open Book

The exam has 80 scored multiple-choice questions with a 3-hour (180-minute) time limit. You need 70% to pass (official Board FAQ). Since the April 2026 bulletin it is open book with the NEC 2023 softcover only — the NEC Handbook is prohibited.

• Wiring & Protection — 16 questions. The heaviest area: grounding and bonding, overcurrent protection, and Chapter 2 protection rules.
• Wiring Methods & Materials — 12 questions. Raceways, cables, boxes, and wiring method rules.
• Equipment for General Use — 12 questions. Receptacles, switches, and general-use equipment.
• Motors & Controls — 11 questions. Motor circuits, controllers, and control wiring.
• General Electrical Theory & Principles — 10 questions. Theory, definitions, and basic principles.
• Service Feeders and Branch Circuits — 5 questions. Services, feeders, and branch-circuit conductors.
• Special Occupancies — 5 questions. Hazardous locations and special-use buildings.
• Special Equipment — 5 questions. Signs, photovoltaic systems, and other special equipment.
• Special Conditions — 2 questions. Emergency systems and related special conditions.
• Communication Systems — 2 questions. Communications circuits and equipment.

How to Prepare

• Weight by the blueprint. Wiring & Protection (16) + Wiring Methods (12) + Equipment (12) is half the exam.
• Master grounding and bonding. It anchors the largest subject area and appears throughout code questions.
• Practice lookup speed. With 80 questions in 3 hours you have just over 2 minutes each — faster open-book navigation matters.
