What Is the Delaware Journeyperson License?

The Delaware Journeyperson Electrician license is issued by the Board of Electrical Examiners, part of the Division of Professional Regulation under 24 Del. C. § 1408. It authorizes journey-level electrical work under the supervision of a Master Electrician.

The Requirements

• 8,000 hours (4 years) of documented electrical experience.
• Board approval before scheduling the examination.
• Pass the Prov exam — 70 scored questions at 75%.

Exam Format: 70 Questions, 3 Hours, Open Book

The exam has 70 scored multiple-choice questions with a 3-hour (180-minute) time limit. You need 75% to pass. It is open book — per DPR policy, all electrical exams follow the most up-to-date NEC adopted in Delaware, which is the 2023 NEC effective January 1, 2026. The exam fee is $100.

• Wiring Methods & Materials — 22 questions. The heaviest area: raceways, cables, boxes, and wiring method rules (nearly a third of the exam).
• Wiring & Protection — 14 questions. Services, feeders, branch circuits, grounding and bonding, and overcurrent protection.
• General Electrical Theory & Principles — 9 questions. Theory, definitions, and basic principles.
• Equipment for General Use — 6 questions. Receptacles, switches, and general-use equipment.
• Communication Systems — 4 questions. Communications circuits and equipment.
• Plan Reading — 4 questions. Reading electrical plans, symbols, and schedules.
• Motors & Controls — 3 questions. Motor circuits and control wiring.
• Special Conditions — 3 questions. Emergency systems and related special conditions.
• Special Equipment — 3 questions. Signs, photovoltaic systems, and other special equipment.
• Special Occupancies — 2 questions. Hazardous locations and special-use buildings.

How to Prepare

• Weight by the blueprint. Wiring Methods (22) + Wiring & Protection (14) is over half of the exam.
• Master Chapter 9 tables. Conduit fill and box fill calculations appear throughout the wiring-methods questions.
• Brush up on plan reading. Delaware uniquely tests electrical symbols and drawing interpretation.
• Practice lookup speed. With 70 questions in 3 hours you have about 2.5 minutes each — open-book navigation is the difference.
• Simulate under exam conditions. Full-length timed runs of 70 questions build the pacing and stamina the real exam rewards.
